Here at Arowhenua Whanau Services we have a Mental Health Team of two Registered Nurses and a Support Worker. The staff role is to assess the patient need and offer support and education to assist recovery.

Mostly we deal with Depression, Anxiety, Grief and Addiction issues.

Referral to our Service can come from the person themselves, or from GP; friend; family.

Our Service is free, confidential and available to anyone in the South Canterbury, of any ethnicity, over the age of 12 years.

Our work may include:

·         Goal setting

·         Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy -REBT

·         Stress/Anxiety management

·         Education around illness and illness prevention

·         Problem solving skills

·         Referral to another agency if appropriate

In the course of helping we may also talk to your GP or a family member, but only with your permission. If we assess your to be more unwell than we can support, we may offer you referral on to the Kensington service.

There is no limit to the number of sessions and discharge would be when you no longer require the service, you move to another service, you chose to stop the contact.

What is depression?

Depression is a low mood that doesn’t go away.

It can affect all ages, races and economic groups. It can affect both men and women, but men are less likely to talk about it.

Depression is not something you can “Snap out of”, but it does respond well to treatment.  The nurses at Arowhenua Whanau Service can help you in your recovery from depression.

What is Anxiety?

Some level of Anxiety is normal, but if it is so high that it affects your normal life, then there are ways to reduce it.

A Panic Attack is an episode of severe Anxiety that comes on suddenly.

The nurses at Arowhenua Whanau Service can help you reduce and overcome your Anxiety.
